The Last March, 1906, oil on canvas, The Frederic Remington Art Museum

The Remington Art Museum presents The Last March for your consideration.

sponsored by The Enchanted Edible Forest at Cross Island Farms.

The Frederic Remington Art Museum’s “Consider This” program takes a closer look at Remington and his nocturnes.

Beginning in 1900, until his death in 1909, Remington created a series of paintings, around seventy, depicting night time scenes. At the turn of the century, Remington's focus as a painter shifted to color. By this time he was already famous for his illustrations and bronze sculptures but this series of paintings secured Remington's legacy as one of America's great painters as well.

"We are so fortunate, here at The Remington Museum, to have such a beautiful collection of Remington's series of nocturne paintings," says Julie Pratt, Museum Experience Manager & Educator at the Museum. "America, at the turn of the century, was changing. Electric lights were changing how we lived, how we worked, and how we experienced the night. Remington was changing as well. His own experiences while documenting the Spanish American war in Cuba had a profound impact on not only his personal life but his art as well. His work took on a darker tone, metaphorically and literally. We're excited to explore this complex history with the public."

“Consider This” is for all ability levels, and no art background is required. Participants simply need an interest in joining the conversation. A different artwork is featured each month, with two program sessions to choose from.

Museum Experience Manager & Educator Julie Pratt along side docents Luanne Herzog and Kathy Crowe, will present two 30-minute lunchtime conversations about Remington’s early sculptures.

  • Friday, August 9th at 12pm with Luanne Herzog (at the Museum only)
  • Wednesday, August 21st at 12pm with Julie Pratt and Kathy Crowe (at the Museum and via Zoom)

To learn more and to register, please call 315-393-2425 or email jupratt@fredericremington.org.

Each session features focused looking, consideration, conversation, and interpretation of the artwork. Programs are offered at noon, so that even working people can join the conversation during their lunch and bring art into their workday.

Participation via Zoom is free; on-site participation is free with admission to the Museum, thanks to generous support of The Enchanted Edible Forest at Cross Island Farms.

While at the Museum make sure to visit our beautiful exhibit of Sally James Farnham sculptures. Our museum is proud to house the largest collection of Farnham’s work in the United States.

Museum hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10am to 5pm, and Sunday 12 to 4pm.
