Sketching in the Gallery Series at the Remington Museum
Ogdensburg, NY — The Frederic Remington Art Museum invites the public to a new Sketching in the Gallery series starting on Wednesday, February 21 from 10:00 am-12:00 pm in the Museum’s Albert P. Newell and Addie P. Newell Galleries. Participants will get a chance to spend some time with the collection of Remington sketches while honing their own drawing skills with the program’s instructor and local artist, Julie Pratt.
In this first class of a three-part series, the focus will be on Remington’s 2-dimensional work, especially his drawings, and sketches in particular. Using his unique mark-making skills as a guide, participants will explore various ways of incorporating more texture and value into their drawings.
All ranges of drawing experience are welcome. Drawing materials will be provided, though artists are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks and pencils if they prefer. The cost of the class is $5 for members of the Remington Museum and $10 for non-members. The class is limited to 15 participants. To register for this program, sign up online , call 315-393-2425, or email info@fredericremington.org.
“Remington was a remarkable draftsman. He knew how to use his tools to achieve magnificent and breathtaking results that still move viewers 100+ years later. Our galleries hold some of the finest examples of Remington’s remarkable ability to create texture, depth, and 3 dimensions using the humblest of tools, the pencil. By stripping away the distractions of color we allow ourselves to focus on value, texture, and mark-making within our work. Sometimes going back to the basics is the way to move forward.” states Julie Pratt, this program’s instructor.
The second class in the series on March 20 will look at Remington’s sculptures and the unique challenge of rendering a 3-dimensional sculpture onto a 2-dimensional surface. In the third, and last class of the series on April 17, participants will explore Remington’s paintings: how he used color to create atmosphere, how he built his compositions, and his handling of the paint.
Each class can be attended independently of the other. Attending all three is not required, although it is recommended.
