Job Title: Curator
Employment Classification: Full Time, Salary, Exempt
Reports to: Executive Director

Salary: $58,500 annually

Job Purpose: 
The Frederic Remington Art Museum Curator provides artistic direction and coordination to the Museum’s artistic program. The Curator is also responsible for all educational programming alongside the Museum Experience Manager.  The incumbent is responsible for general scholarship and research in the work and life of Frederic Remington, Sally James Farnham and their contemporaries, and works closely with the Director, and other members of the staff to advance the institution’s mission.
 
Responsibilities:
Exhibitions  
  • Plays a significant role in the formulation of the overall direction of the Museum's artistic efforts and long-range exhibition schedule. 
  • Prepares exhibition proposals 2-3 years in advance of exhibition dates for review and approval by the Director. 
  • Originates one to two exhibitions of varying scales each year with accompanying publication, when possible.
  • Works to secure touring venues for exhibitions. 
  • Coordinates and installs exhibitions. 
  • Develops, produces, and analyzes exhibition-related programming, educational materials, and didactics while collaborating with the Museum Experience Manager.
  • Works with the Executive Director to track exhibition budgets and expenditures. 
  • Identifies potential exhibition funding opportunities for the Director to pursue. 
  • Fosters and actively participates in collegial dialogue, sharing of professional opinions, and advancement of ideas and scholarship related to American art within and without the Museum and with institutional partners.
  • Maintains a visible role in the community including the maintenance of relationships with artists, museums, galleries, collectors, donors, educational institutions, and members of the public
Collection Management
  • Ensures that the highest level of professional care is given to works of art owned by the Museum and on loan to the Museum
  • Maintains records and cataloging of all museum acquisitions
  • Ensures collections are properly preserved
  • Examines and analyzes the authenticity of relevant works of art prior to acquisition 
Public Information and Electronic Media 
  • Provides information and assistance to develop communications and marketing materials and strategies regarding exhibitions and programs.
  • Contributes to Museum publications and communication efforts as requested.
  • Provides information regarding exhibitions and programs for website and social media content.
  • Prepares exhibition-related materials for public relations and marketing efforts. 
  • Contributes to the development of communications and marketing strategies and materials to serve audiences and to enhance the Museum’s image, identity, and donor prospects. 
Development, Donor Relations, and Institutional Advancement
  • Under the supervision of the Executive Director takes an active role in the identification of possible funding sources, and in grant preparation and reporting. 
  • Participates in other Museum membership and public programs. 
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of donor travel. 
  • Joins the Executive Director for meetings with funders when requested.
  • Represents the Museum to the public at large. 
  • Attends exhibitions and related events. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements and skills:
  • Experience with museum databases and other applications
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work well with colleagues, other employees, artists, donors, and lenders 
  • Familiarity and experience with appropriate, current computer programs and technology
  • Organization, accuracy, and attention to detail
Schedule:
  • Monday through Friday. May require the occasional weekend for special events.
  • Typical Shifts are 9am - 4pm.
Education Requirement: 
  • Advanced degree in art history or a related field, preferred.
  • 5+ years of curatorial experience with a record of increasing professional responsibility and measurable accomplishments
  • Record of significant exhibitions and publications

Museum Interpreter

 

The Frederic Remington Art Museum has an immediate opening for the position of Museum Interpreter. This part-time, paid position requires excellence in customer service for diverse audiences. The work of the Museum Interpreter involves welcoming visitors to the Museum, providing orientation to our site, answering visitor questions, and helping to provide a memorable experience. Interpreters process Museum admissions, memberships, shop sales, and fees for programs and events. The job includes answering the phone, and  routine cleaning of Museum spaces to ensure the best possible visitor experience. Interpreters will occasionally assist with special events.  The work is performed under the general supervision of professional staff of the Museum, who outline procedures to be followed and explain how tasks are to be carried out. Availability during the Museum's operating hours, including weekdays and weekends, is required.
