July 2022: Yomarie Silva-O'Neal to be Artist in Residence at Remington Museum

Ogdensburg, NY — This July and early August, the Frederic Remington Art Museum will host Yomarie Silva-O’Neal as its artist in residence. Silva-O’Neal will be in residence at the Museum between July 14 and August 5, when the public will have a number of opportunities to interact with the artist, in a wide variety of ways.

Throughout her residency, Silva-O’Neal’s artwork will be on display in the Museum’s Hirschey Family Gallery. Silva-O’Neal will be working in the same gallery, and visitors are encouraged to drop in to talk with her about her work and artistic process. More formally, Silva-O’Neal will discuss her work in an artist’s talk on Thursday, July 28 at 4:30 pm. The talk is free and open to the public and will be held in the Museum’s Tiffany Room, with a reception to follow.

On Friday, July 29, Silva-O’Neal will teach a mold-making class. This hands-on class will introduce the use of alginate to create molds of natural materials. After learning to make their own molds, participants will use soap to cast a sculpture using the molds they created. The class will be held from 10am to noon in the Museum’s Eva Caten Remington Education Center at 323 Washington Street, Ogdensburg, NY. Materials will be provided, and all skill levels are welcome (children must be accompanied by an adult). Cost for the class is $15 for Museum members and $25 for nonmembers. Space is limited and registration is required. For more information and to register, call 315-393-2425 or email info@fredericremington.org

As part of her collaboration with the Remington Museum, Silva-O’Neal will curate an exhibition of select Remington works, which will open on Thursday, July 21 with a public talk by the curator at 4:30 pm in the Museum’s Addie P. Newell Gallery. A reception will follow.

Silva-O’Neal also served as juror for the Museum’s Annual Members’ Juried Art Exhibit, which opened in May and which will remain on view through September 11.

Yomarie Silva-O’Neal was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1973. She is Professor of Sculpture at Miami Dade College, where she teaches Sculpture, 3-D design, Drawing, Color & Composition, and Art Appreciation. She has been teaching at Miami Dade since the Fall of 2006. Her work focuses on small and seemingly insignificant biological forms and is the intersection of her love of art and science. She uses repetition in her sculptures of organic and man-made forms, changing their scale and changing how we as viewers would normally encounter them.

“We are excited to have in residence an artist whose work bridges not only the techniques of sculpting and drawing but also the areas of art and science,” says Museum Curator & Educator Laura Desmond. “Silva-O’Neal has undertaken an impressive range of projects as part of her residency, from curating an exhibition of Remington’s work, to teaching a mold-making class, to demonstrating and sharing her own outstanding work. I anticipate that visitors of all ages will have an enriching experience during her residency, whether they simply stop in to talk and see her at work, attend one of her presentations, take her mold-making class, or view her artworks on display in the Museum’s Hirschey Family Gallery.”
